Where Have All THe Children Gone?
April marks the start of spring, What does that mean for our neighborhood parks and playgrounds?
Probably not much!
What has contributed to the demise of kids playing outside?
Is it cable TV? Is It Video Games? Is it the computer and internet? Is it fear for their safety?
I grew up with one family TV that got 5 channels, usually playing outside was a more attractive alternative, but not today.
Kids as young as elementary school have iPhones , and most by the time they hit junior high have Facebook pages, so there is never a dull moment.
No one is disputing the fact that there are plenty of organized activities -I question the unstructured, unorganized, unbalanced,
unsupervised activity. Where kids handle their own disputes, Where they organize their own rules, Where leaders are born, and team work is inevitable.
Outside, on my backyard swing set is where I dreamed of the future.
Some of my favorite childhood memories didn’t cost a penny- enjoying playing outside with my friends until the streetlights came on.
